At Culinary Concepts AB, we don’t just teach the trade; we build the people who drive it. From training raw talent to helping small business owners realize their dreams and grow their operations, we look past statistics to focus on true human empowerment.

Through using the kitchen as a place for powerful transformation, we are uniting individuals and entrepreneurs to cook, create, and construct a community where no one stands alone. Instead, our students are surrounded by a village of partners, people, and organizations that collaborate to ensure their lasting success.
Beyond the curriculum, the terminology, and the program is the real engine and our special sauce that makes the work we do truly transformation: real, powerful human connection. You see it in the hustle of our training kitchens, the focus of our daily meetings, and the impact of our community events.
We work with a heart-centered, person-centric ecosystem built on genuine relationships and deep care for everyone we touch. We are a collective of passionate, purpose-driven people who know that real change isn’t coded in a syllabus – it is forged together, and through relationships.
After graduating another cohort this past month in Richmond, VA at the Kitchens at Reynolds Community College, our team was reminded of the “heart of our work.” For us, this is really about building powerful partnerships and meaningful, lasting connections so that we can help people, families, and our local community create the conditions necessary for flourishing.
Whether it be through certifications, job trails that lead to employer connections, or targeted skills development, our work is rooted in a commitment to helping others succeed, especially those people who have been underserved, overlooked, or that need second chances after difficult life events.
This month, we reflect on those ideas, deeply appreciating how it takes a tribe to help young people in our programs overcome challenging circumstances and navigate far more than a resume or intake form could ever capture. This idea is not just a slogan for us – it is a reality we live and see every day thanks to the supportive, impactful, and energetic ecosystem in which we operate.
We often think of our programs as spaces for transformation. In part, that is true. Lots of big change, deep learning, and skill-building happens in our programs. But, that is only a piece of the puzzle.
The other major catalyst for the big changes that take place are all the other people, partners, and organizations who help us achieve our mission and move our programs forward in powerful ways, ensuring sustainable success for our students before, during, and long after their time with us. You want to see this ecosystem in action?
Look no further than our latest Growth Opportunities for Cooks (GO Cook) program cohort that took place at the Kitchens at Reynolds Community College and was delivered in partnership. We created Serving Up Success to act as Virginia’s very first pre-apprenticeship program for justice-impacted youth, using our Go Cook curriculum as the engine to empower their transformation.
Pulling off a historic, first-of-its-kind statewide initiative required every single organization to move in perfect lockstep. VRLTA aligned us with industry standards, while our long-time partners at Virginia Career Works Capital Region provided the tactical backbone – deploying WIOA funding and covering transportation costs to guarantee students’ daily attendance.
But a blueprint is nothing without the people it serves. At the absolute core of this entire operation was Richmond Educational Community Services (RECS) – led by AJ Sam, a leader whose relentless commitment and fierce dedication to these young people is not just inspirational; it provides unparalleled support and a foundation for them to thrive.
No one understands the raw reality of what it takes for these students to succeed better than AJ. Through his partnership with Richmond Public Schools, AJ designed RECS as a relentless 12-week mentorship and life skills gauntlet explicitly built to anchor justice-involved youth.

Running this historic GO Cook cohort side-by-side with him was a masterclass for our team. We witnessed firsthand what true devotion looks like—AJ doesn’t just manage a program; he is a true advocate, actively fighting for the future of every single young adult in his care, showing up with a level of fierce dedication that left us in awe.
AJ doesn’t talk much about his work, he lives and breathes it. He knows the histories, stories, and life context of each and every young adult that participates in his programs. He knows their families, their struggles, and the complex challenges they face on a daily basis. He knows their goals, dreams, and aspirations. It is not speaking in hyperbole to say that AJ could write a biography on each of the people he helps, and he literally glows when he talks about their progress and futures.
For example, on a daily basis AJ gave rides to those who didn’t have transportation to get to our programs. He attended the majority of the classes to watch their growth in real time. He showed up for them more than anyone else aside from Chef Ami, consistently providing the presence, guidance, and enduring support they needed. It was clear that for AJ these were not cases, cohorts, or students. These were beautiful young people living with abnormally difficult circumstances. And what they needed most was a wise, caring, compassionate person like AJ showing up for them without judgment and with lots of love.
Some are caring for siblings full time. Some are supporting their parents who are on disability and cannot work. Some are rebuilding their lives after being incarcerated, while navigating housing instability, probation, and lingering effects of trauma. Yet, despite such complex and challenging circumstances, the one constant for them all is that they wanted to create a better life for themselves and their family. And AJ was there to make sure that happened. For him, failure or giving up simply wasn’t an option. That is the power of partnership and that is what it means to be a remarkable human dedicated to making a difference in our world.
As we worked in partnership with AJ, RPS, Reynolds, VRLTA, and the great folks at VCW during this program, we were reminded that transformation does
not happen in isolation. Nor does it happen through a 7-week intensive culinary and workforce training program. It happens in real relationships, through supportive partnerships, and by us all working to provide the essential resources, support, and opportunities people need to make sustained progress. It happens through a loving village uniting, collaborating, and staying committed to each person’s success, despite the difficulties and obstacles.
Perhaps most importantly, transformation in our programs happens thanks to people who lead with loving kindness and a dedication to their mission. When someone sees not just a student but a whole life and the possibilities of what that person can become. Real transformation happens thanks to people like AJ Sam, who provide the presence, empathy, guidance, and persistence that each person needs to ensure they succeed.
👉 In our full Partner Spotlight, we have a brief conversation with AJ to learn more about him, his transformational work, the students he serves, and the pioneering “Serving Up Success” apprenticeship model that is changing what workforce pathways can look like when true care and real opportunity coincide.
Because at the end of the day, our work is not about the skills, certifications, or graduations. It is about empowering people, uplifting families, and creating communities that are healthy, happy, and vibrant. And to do that, always takes a village.
